Marilyn Monroe paved the way for sexiness. Even to this day actresses, models and pop stars try to emulate her style and beauty. Sure, she inspires but there will only be one Monroe.

There was something about her, so magical and unique, I’ve never seen anyone look like her. Sure I’ve seen people truss up in the white dress and emulate her makeup, practice her famous pout and talk in her breathless voice. It’s a good try, but nothing compares to the original genius.

On top of her physical magnificence, she was a damn good actress. It’s just a great, great pity that she never lived to continue on with her artistic genius. What would she have come up with next?

My favourite Monroe film of all time was Some Like it Hot. Set in the 1920’s during prohibition, she teams up with comic wonders Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

Monroe superbly plays the part of Sugar Cain, a ukulele player and singer in an all girl band heading for Florida. Curtis and Lemmon are on the run from the mob and therefore dress up as women and join the band to escape the deadly mob leader Spatz Columbo.

Below is a still from the film, along with myself as a blonde, inspired by Monroe’s iconic 1920’s style from the film.

Thank you for your inspiration Marilyn, every woman has been inspired by you one way or another.

Dark and dingy, strobe lights and smoke
Indi music and trance
Students that stagger, girls that swagger
Flirt, drink and dance

Lights are low, the floor is sticky
Music plays from the past
Smell the alcohol, pupils dilate
4am? Wow it’s gone so fast

Girls with no money still get drunk
Boys that try it on
Skirts hitched high, a secret, a lie
“Christ, my purse I’ve lost it, it’s gone!”

Kiss in a corner, under darkness
Vodka shots no ice
A smashed glass or two, the floor now wet
No more for you, take my advice

Absynth the green fairy, lick your lips
Heart pumps to the sound of base
A cigarette outside, the music has died
Lipstick smudged all over is face

The Honest Courtesan

Where there is no imagination there is no horror.  –  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

“Scary Movies” is the name of my one year ago today column, but it’s about the interaction between porn and escorting; I did do a short piece on vampire sex workers as part of October Miscellanea, but since I really love horror movies, I think we’re long overdue for a discussion of them.  Before we start I should mention that slasher flicks aren’t horror; yes, I know that video stores stock them with horror and movie companies often stamp “horror” on the boxes, but that’s about as valid an argument as “the sex offender registry is not a criminal penalty because it is housed in an administrative agency, not in a court office or in an agency charged with carrying out punishment.”  Slashers are actually more closely related to porn than horror…

The trainees at The Crumbs Project enjoyed reading a spooky book befitting for Halloween.

I took along Sweet Jasmine Stakes and Magic, where the trainees who suffer from learning difficulties, read aloud to practice their reading skills.

It was a great afternoon and some wonderfully improved reading took place.

Well done!
